Focus 40 Day 40: Extreme Living—Honoring God with Our Resources
HE IS RISEN!
Extreme Living—Honoring God with Our Resources
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’”
—Acts 17:24–28 (NIV)
IF GOD MADE THE WORLD and everything in it, shouldn’t it be our act of worship to honor him with all of it. Many people will read the statement above and see the word offering and be instantly proud that they got it or mad that I brought it up. But I am not just talking about the joy box or the offering plate that gets passed in services and Sunday school.
Are you honoring God with everything you have? God gave you the ability to work and earn money, so honor him with your career and with how you manage your finances. God surrounded us with a world that is not only functional and life sustaining, but beautiful, so honor him with how we take care of the environment. God is not just the God of today, but forever, so honor him with our time and our future. These are all gifts. Will we receive them as a gift or will we approach them with the attitude that God owes us those? If we begin to look at them from that perspective, we will find ourselves angry at God when one of them is taken from us.
So today, strive to honor God with the gifts he has given you for the gifts he has given you. Do this as an act of worship and you will find yourself blessed beyond measure. (I don’t mean financially blessed. Just blessed.)
God, today may I find pleasure in the gifts I have received and may I honor you by offering them to you for your kingdom and not mine. Help me to be quick to offer these gifts to a family member, to a neighbor, or to my community as I love you and love all you have put in my path. Amen.
