Extreme Living—Growing by Expanding the Kingdom?
“You must not let yourselves be distressed—you must hold on to your faith in God and to your faith in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s House. If there were not, should I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? It is true that I am going away to prepare a place for you, but it is just as true that I am coming again to welcome you into my own home, so that you may be where I am. You know where I am going and you know the road I am going to take…I myself am the road,…and the truth and the life.”
—John 14:1–4, 6 (Phillips)
RECENTLY MY WIFE AND I were sitting in our motorhome watching the Gaither Homecoming video Heaven. Throughout the video various singers were saying in between songs, “See ya at the house! I was reminiscing over the time when I went to Florida to preach my last uncle’s funeral, my uncle Bill. On the trip down to Florida, I had a heavy heart because the last time I shared the plan of salvation with Uncle Bill, he refused to accept it. I continued to pray for him, hoping the Lord would bring someone into his life that could help him get to Jesus. A Baptist hospice minister told me he had prayed with Uncle Bill as he invited Jesus into his life! That news changed the whole thrust of my message, as well as the tone of our hearts and the service. It turned into a celebration of a homegoing rather than sad parting words. “If the thief on the cross could make it,” I thought, “Uncle Bill could too.” Precious comfort! Blessed assurance! That’s why grace is called amazing!
As I pondered these memories, I thought, “Everything we do should point those we love and lead to the way back home to God and help disciple them in the faith so they can point those they love and lead to the way back home to God.” We grow in Christ and the kingdom of God grows when we enable others to start their journey.
Lord, thanks for the gift of eternal life in Jesus! And thanks for the high privilege of pointing people to the way back home to God and helping those we love and lead make it to heaven, safely into the City of Eternal Light—with you forever! Thanks for stretching us as we try to help expand your kingdom! And we sing, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! For the Lord God almighty reigns forever and ever and ever. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory. Amen!
