Day 21
Extreme Living—Unity in Diversity

After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. —Revelation 7:9 (LB)

WHEN WE GET TO HEAVEN, we are going to experience community like never before. We will be in the presence of the Trinity—God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There we will be with our brothers and sisters of every race, tribe. and people. Our differences will be inconsequential because our oneness in Jesus will supersede everything else.

Let’s start practicing for heaven today. Why wait for our future when we can begin living it today? There is level ground at the foot of the cross. Let’s focus on what unites us rather than what divides us.

Martin Luther King Jr. said that Sundays are the most segregated day in the week. Look around you on a Sunday. How many people are basically the same demographic as you? Our reality is that unless we are very intentional, we will tend to seek out those that are most like us.

You could start with those most marginalized in the culture—the widows, orphans, the poor, and the foreigners. Study those words in the Scripture and you will see that God has them heavy on his heart and he is continually admonishing his people to care for them like he does.

Matthew 25 tells us that when we give a cup of water, when we clothe the needy, when we reach out to the prisoner, when we do it to the least of these it is as if we are serving Jesus himself. When we do these things, we will start to practice living in heaven’s reality today. Many of these are the “last who will be first.” As we serve, we will find that we have much in common. Not one of us would not make it without the grace of Jesus.

Lord, may we value the beauty and diversity of humanity like you do. Give me the wisdom and courage to intentionally seek it out daily. Amen.
